Susan's story

In 2015, when Susan’s mother became ill, she moved back from Nairobi to her mother’s coffee farm to take care of her. In Nairobi, Susan had been studying medicine. Back in Kitale, in the west of Kenya, Susan couldn't find a job she liked and decided to take care of the coffee farm.

When her mother passed away, Susan decided to continue running the farm. A rather extraordinary life journey from doctor to coffee farmer.

In 2018, Susan realized that the farm was getting very little money for the coffee, so she began a journey to learn as much as possible about coffee. Especially about how to improve the quality of the coffee.

Since Susan's family had produced coffee in a certain way throughout their lives, it was very difficult for her to change her father’s mind and apply more modern methods. Therefore, Susan launched a secret experiment while her father was in Nairobi. She implemented methods she had found online on a small part of the farm and changed the cycle of the trees in that test area.

In 2020, her experiment bore fruit in the literal sense! The trees produced many more coffee cherries, and the quality of the coffee was much better. From that moment on, her father and the other coffee producers around her started taking her methods seriously.

Today, the neighboring farms (which are mostly run by men) come to Susan with questions and ask for help when they need it.

It does take a woman to change the cycle!

The Coffee

Susan's coffee is really fruity, with flavors that you wouldn’t expect in coffee! To preserve these flavors, the coffee is lightly roasted. It’s a true experience, but not for those who prefer darker roasted, traditional coffee! However, if you're like me and enjoy funkier coffees, Susan's coffee is just perfect for you!
