This black pepper comes from Idjwi Island in the Democratic Republic of Congo . It is grown and dried by Elody Wema Naburafiki and her women’s cooperative (Coopérative des Productrices des Epices Wa Mama Congo Ni Tamu). In addition to black pepper, they also produce a wide range of other products, such as coffee, cloves, white pepper, ginger, and nutmeg.
Black pepper is the fruit of the climbing plant of the same name. It is harvested just before the fruit ripens and then dried with the outer husk. Black pepper has an intense flavor and is also a bit more spicy than white pepper.
You can get it in a jar (80g), a tube (8g) and in a set (4 different spices).
Here you can also get the milder white pepper from the same cooperative.
